Has anyone ever gone on a date and split the bill? Yes, I know it’s common. But, after the date when you’re asked if you’d like to go home with them, and you respond with a firm no, did they offer to e-transfer you your half of the bill so you’d change your mind? No? Just me?
Let me take you on a little ride.
I hadn’t gone on a date in a while and I was feeling the dating app burnout. But after some deliberation, I convinced myself to put on a little makeup and a cute bodysuit and head to the local pub to meet someone I had been chatting to for the past couple days. The first hour was fun, we ordered beer and chatted about sports, family, y’know, the usual. The second hour was also fun, we got some pull tabs, ordered food, and tried to converse over the music in the background.

He was cute, tall and lived with his brother. I admired that he enjoyed family, had been enjoying his career for over eight years and had a quirky laugh. But then it was time for the bill.
“How would you like your bill today?” The waitress asked.
“Split,” my date said as he diverted eye contact.
I reached into my purse and pulled my wallet out. We kept talking about the game that was on, and after I put my card on the table, I packed up the rest of my quesadilla. We paid our bills and headed outside towards our cars.
“So, did you wanna come back to my place?” My date murmured as we slowly approached his vehicle.
“I had a nice time, but I think I’m going to head home.” I said.
“Oh, why?”
I stared at him for a second, “Why?”
“Yeah, why don’t you want to come over?”
“I think if you were a bit more of a gentleman,” I awkwardly laughed, “Then I’d consider it.”
He leaned in for a kiss and his lips touched mine. I pulled back.
“Because I didn’t get the bill?”
“Honestly, yeah.”
“Well, I’ll literally e-transfer you right now, if it’s that big of a deal.”
“Oh, the money isn’t the issue, “ I said, backing away. “It’s just the principle.”
I got into my car, and watched as he drove out of the parking lot. I turned the ignition on, and sobbed.
